LO3 - Be able to reaserch and plan content for a news article.
Planning My article
The Genres which i could write about:
Sports
Music
Entertainment
Community
Politics
The ideas i have for potential articles that i would be interested in writing are
1) 100 years on: The effects of of war on Sheffield and what is being done to commemorate those who were lost.
2) Local peoples opinions on the Brexit proses and Scotlands Independence referendum
3) The effects that brexit could have on local business.
I have decided that the article I want to write from the ones I have listed below is the one about the 100 year anniversary of World War one and what Sheffield is doing to commemorate those lost. I think that this article would be the most appropriate as that with this anniversary coming in just a year the people of the city will want to know what is being done to remember the events of the war. As well as this political division is a hot button issue at this time and therefore there will likely be a large amount of debate surrounding the city council spending large amounts of money on an expensive memorial.
As souses I could potentially access for this piece I could try and get an interview with a professor from the the university of Sheffield.

Evaluation of reaserch techiques:
Secondary reaserch techniques:
Journals/ papers and books:
Very academic and therefore can be hard to understand
It is likely that there is a paper somewhere writing about your chosen subject
state research:
Unbiased facts and statistics
May be very generalistic as that the government covers large areas of research
film documentaries:
May be very bias in an attempt to appeal to their target audience.
Contain large amounts of information from first hand sources.
social media:
Can be written by anyone and therefore will be heavily bias if not simply false.
Very easy to access and give the opinions of normal people.
online webpages:
Large archives of information available for free immediately.
Some webpages (such as Wikipedia) can be edited by many people and therefore can be anti-factual.
film documentaries:
May be very bias in an attempt to appeal to their target audience.

.
When writing articles it is normal for journalists to draw upon both primary and secondary research.
Websites such as the following help them to gain secondary information: Blottr, Google Alerts, Geofeedia, PULSE, Knomea, Social mention. These are all social media data bases and therefore help them to gain the general consensus of normal people on the stories they are reporting on. Crowd sourcing also allows Journalists to gain polls of people on social media. Web sourcing is the use of any source found online.
My secondary reaserch sources:
Frances Perraudin (2016 ) Sheffield council urged to drop plans to fell war memorial trees [Online], Avalible:
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/nov/30/sheffield-council-urged-to-drop-plans-to-fell-war-memorial-trees
[Wednsday 30 November], accessed 04/04/2017
I have also drawn upon a website called sheffied Solder WW1 link below:
http://www.sheffieldsoldierww1.co.uk/
I will likely use this websites section on the war at home in order to summarize the effects of the war on Sheffield. This information should help me to make the article more emotive (as that I to contains information about attacks on the readers home city.

Primary research:
There are man different types of primary reaserch that I could employ when writing my article. I have attempted to give the strengths and weaknesses of each In the mindmap below
I have employed multiple techniques for my primary research for my article:
Firstly I have decided to E-mail two Doctors who work in the University of Sheffield's history department.
Dr Emily Baughan (Lecturer in 19th/20th Century British History)
Dr Esme Cleall (Lecturer in the History of the British Empire.)
The E-Mail reads as follows:
I also created a short survey so that i could gain normal peoples opinions on my subject.
I also created a short survey so that i could gain normal peoples opinions on my subject.
As well as this i also intend to interview someone who works in sheffield city coucil regarding weather they belive there is any reason to have a special memorial.
I Sent a general inquiry to Sheffield city council which reads as follows.
101003319883. (referance number)
my inquiry read as follows
Hello: I am a student studying journalism at UTC Sheffield city center and I am currently writing an article about how WW1 effected Sheffield and what, if anything is being done to commemorate the 100th year anniversary. Could you please answer the questions I have written below:
How much money does Sheffield usually spend on its war memorials and commemorations such as remembrance day celebrations?
Is anything being planned for a special 100th anniversary commemoration?
As a representative of Sheffield city council do you feel this type of commemoration is appropriate?
